Oral Cancer is defined as the uncontrollable growth of cells that invade and cause damage to surrounding tissue. Oral cancer appears as a growth or sore in the mouth that does not go away. Oral cancer includes cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and throat. Early detection of periodontal disease can save your smile; early detection through oral cancer screening can save your life.

Periodontal Screening

We look for the early signs of gum disease, including irritated or bleeding gums. Often there is plaque and tartar that accumulate below the gum line. In this scenario, we will clean and smooth this area with special instruments to ensure that the area is completely spotless.

If this area is not kept clean the entire area can become irritated with the bacteria that resides in the tartar and plaque. It’s very important to have your dentist check this area if you have bleeding during brushing.
